The short answer
Take whichever test every programme on your list accepts and you can score higher on. ISB and IIM Ahmedabad's PGPX accept both, so your section strengths and score-expiry dates usually decide. Take one timed practice test of each and book only after your school list confirms the choice.

Introduction
Your target school's admissions page, not the test, decides which score you need. For an Indian Master of Business Administration (MBA) applicant, the better starting point for the Graduate Management Admission Test (GMAT) versus the Graduate Record Examinations (GRE) is the admissions page of each programme on your list. That page, not a forum thread, says which score the school will read.
Fees matter less than whether a school takes only a test-centre score, how old a score may be on the application deadline, and which section you can improve fastest. You can check all three in an evening.
This page gives the differences that matter, two real admissions rules as worked examples, a score-expiry check and a one-evening decision sheet. We publish it as a coaching directory, not a test provider. Coaching comes last, once you have chosen.
Key takeaways
- Read each target programme's own admissions page before choosing. The Indian School of Business (ISB) states no preference between the two tests, and the Indian Institute of Management (IIM) Ahmedabad's Post Graduate Programme in Management for Executives (PGPX) accepts both.
- The tests differ in design: the GMAT is longer and has no writing section, and the GRE gives you a calculator in both quant sections and lets you change answers freely.
- The GMAT's $275 test-centre list price is the US and Canada price and carries 18% GST on bookings from India, so compare the rupee totals at registration, then choose mainly on section strengths and score-expiry dates.
- Take a practice test of each, compare your quant and verbal results, and book only after your school list confirms the choice.
GMAT vs GRE for an Indian MBA: which test should you take?
Take whichever test every programme on your list accepts and you can score higher on. If a school accepts both, it does not matter which you pick, because ISB states on its own admissions page: "There is no minimum GRE or GMAT score needed to apply, and we do not have a preference toward one test or the other."
Most Indian MBA programmes admit through the Common Admission Test (CAT), covered in our guide to the best online CAT coaching. GMAT or GRE matters mainly for programmes like ISB and IIM Ahmedabad's PGPX.
That settles the common worry about whether choosing the "wrong" test counts against you, at least at ISB. ISB accepts the GMAT (10th Edition or Focus Edition) or the GRE. IIM Ahmedabad's PGPX requires a valid GMAT or GRE score and accepts GMAT Focus Edition scores.
Where schools accept both, the real decision is personal. Which test can you score higher on with the weeks you have? The rest of this page helps you answer that.
What actually differs between the GMAT and the GRE?
The tests differ in length, scoring, calculator use, how you move through questions, price and how long a score stays valid. Quantitative reasoning (quant) means the maths sections, and verbal means the English-language sections. As of November 2026, the main differences are set out in the profile and comparison tables above.
The comparison describes the current GMAT Focus Edition, the version you would book now (GMAC). Schools such as ISB also still accept older 10th Edition scores while they remain valid.
The GMAT's length, scoring, calculator, question-navigation and price rows come from GMAC, which owns the GMAT. The GRE's calculator, navigation and writing rows come from ETS's comparison page, and its price row from ETS's fee page; ETS owns the GRE. The score-age row comes from the ISB and IIM Ahmedabad admissions pages.
Is the GMAT tougher? Neither test is harder across the board; they test different things. In our view, the GMAT's quant rewards reasoning with little calculator help, while the GRE's verbal sections lean on vocabulary. That is a view, not a measured result, which is why a practice test of each matters more than any ranking of difficulty.
How do you read a school's admissions rules for GMAT and GRE?
Open the programme's own admissions or eligibility page and write down four things: which tests it accepts, whether it takes only test-centre scores, the minimum score if any, and how old a score may be. These four items decide whether a score is accepted at all, which is why we check them before comparing the tests.
Two worked examples, as of November 2026:
- ISB PGP (Postgraduate Programme in Management). It accepts the GMAT or the GRE, requires "a valid and verified test centre-based score", and sets no minimum score. Scores must be no older than five years from the application deadline.
- IIM Ahmedabad PGPX (one-year MBA for experienced professionals). For the 2027-28 batch it requires a GMAT or GRE score taken within the last five years. Its page states that "Online GMAT/GRE (Take home) exam scores are not valid, only test centre-based GMAT/GRE scores are valid." It also requires at least four years of full-time work experience as on 31 March 2027.
Notice what is missing from both: neither names a favourite test. The question "which do they prefer?" has a published answer, and it is on the school's page.
Score-expiry check
ISB measures the age of a score from the application deadline, not from the day you apply. As of November 2026, ISB's published window for Round 3 of the 2027-28 cycle accepts tests taken from 18 January 2022 to 17 January 2027. Pass means your test date is within five years before the deadline of your chosen round, with a few weeks to spare; fail means it is on or past the edge. A score about to expire is a reason to retest or apply in an earlier round, not to hope the date is read generously.
Does the exam fee change the choice between GMAT and GRE?
Compare the rupee totals shown at registration before treating the fees as equal. GMAC's $275 test-centre and $300 online prices are the US and Canada list prices on its page of 14 April 2026, and GMAC applies 18% Goods and Services Tax (GST) to bookings made from India. ETS lists the GRE General Test at $249 from 1 August 2026.
ETS lists a $55 GRE rescheduling fee and $40 for each additional score recipient. For the GMAT's rescheduling and extra score report fees, read GMAC's exam payment page at registration. For India, the rupee amount and any tax appear at registration, so read that figure before you pay and do not rely on a blog's conversion.
Both schools above require test-centre scores, so the online GMAT price is irrelevant if you are applying to them.
How can you choose between the GMAT and the GRE in one evening?
Run five checks and let the results decide. Each has a pass or fail.
Step 4 is our recommendation, and you should compare section results, not total scores, because the two scales (205 to 805 against 130 to 170 per section) do not convert by simple arithmetic.
Our recommendation for engineers: if working without a calculator and reasoning through data feels comfortable, try the GMAT first. If vocabulary-heavy verbal feels like the harder climb and you want a calculator, try the GRE first. The practice tests then confirm or overturn that.

- 1. List targets
- Test
- Write each programme's name and its admissions page link
- Pass
- Every programme has its own page link
- Fail
- A programme is listed only from a forum or an agent
- Step
- 2. Accepted tests
- Test
- Note GMAT, GRE or both for each
- Pass
- Each programme has a stated answer
- Fail
- Any programme left as "probably both"
- Step
- 3. Format rules
- Test
- Test-centre only? Minimum score? Score age?
- Pass
- All three noted per programme
- Fail
- Any missing
- Step
- 4. Practice both
- Test
- Take one official practice test of each under timed conditions
- Pass
- You have a quant and a verbal result for both
- Fail
- You tried only one
- Step
- 5. Decide
- Test
- Pick the test where your weaker section is closer to your target
- Pass
- One test chosen with a reason in one line
- Fail
- "I feel like GMAT" with no result behind it
Where does coaching fit once you have chosen?
Compare coaching only after the test is chosen, because the right provider depends on which exam you sit. For this step we recommend Online Coaching 4u, which is free for students to browse, compare and enquire through.
Our online coaching directory includes listings that mention GMAT or GRE preparation, such as IMS Learning Resources and CATKing Educare, both hybrid. A Verified badge on a profile means the institute shared its details and we verified them, and ratings are labelled by where they came from. Confirm fees, batches, faculty, duration and refund terms with the provider directly.
For the terms to get in writing before paying for GRE preparation, use our GRE coaching comparison. For refund terms in general, see how to check a coaching refund policy, and for choosing between modes see online vs offline coaching.
We are a directory. We do not teach courses, run classes or take course payments, so your enquiry goes to the provider you choose. When you are ready, start at Online Coaching 4u.
Our verdict
Check each target programme's admissions page first, then book the test on which your timed practice section results are stronger.
How we compared
We compared the GMAT Focus Edition and the GRE General Test on format, scoring, calculator use, fees and score age, using the GMAC and ETS pages, and the ISB and IIM Ahmedabad PGPX admissions pages, as of November 2026. We did not compare other schools' rules or coaching providers' courses.
