Last updated: 2 August 2026. Unlike CLAT and CAT, neither IIM Indore nor IIM Rohtak has released an official IPMAT 2027 notification yet as of this writing. Everything below dated "expected" is based on the pattern of previous years, not a confirmed announcement, bookmark this page and we'll update it the moment either IIM notifies.

IPMAT is genuinely more fragmented than most aspirants realise going in. It isn't one national exam, it's two separate exams (run independently by IIM Indore and IIM Rohtak, with different question papers and formats), plus two more IIMs that piggyback on IIM Indore's score without running their own test, plus a fifth and sixth IIM that use an entirely different NTA-run exam under a different name. Here's how that actually breaks down, and what's expected for the 2027 admission cycle.

Quick facts

IIM Indore IPMAT: exam expected early May 2027 (unconfirmed); official site iimidr.ac.in

IIM Rohtak IPMAT: exam expected mid-May 2027 (unconfirmed); official site iimrohtak.ac.in

IIM Ranchi & IIM Amritsar: use IIM Indore's IPMAT score, no separate exam

IIM Jammu & IIM Bodh Gaya: use a different, NTA-run exam called JIPMAT

2026 fees (for reference): ₹4,130 Indore (General) / ₹4,937 Rohtak (flat)

Which IIMs actually run "IPMAT," and which don't

This piece focuses on IPMAT Indore and IPMAT Rohtak specifically, since those are the exams actually branded "IPMAT." If Jammu or Bodh Gaya are on your list, JIPMAT (100 questions across QA, DILR and VARC, 400 marks, 150 minutes, no sectional time limit) is a separate exam you'd need to research and register for independently through the NTA.

We want to be direct about how tentative this table is: it's built by projecting forward from each IIM's 2026 cycle, not from an official 2027 notification, since none has been released yet. Both IIMs have shifted their exact dates by a week or two in different years, so use this as a rough planning horizon (broadly, expect registration in February and the exam in May), not a date to write into your calendar as fixed.

Eligibility snapshot

Both exams share a broadly similar eligibility bar, minimum 60% aggregate in both Class 10 and Class 12 (55% for SC/ST/PwD), plus an unusually strict age cap (roughly 20 years as of a specific date each year, with a 5-year relaxation for SC/ST/PwD candidates), unlike most other entrance exams that have no upper age limit at all. Our detailed IPMAT eligibility, syllabus and pattern comparison covers the exact mechanics and cites the age-cap dates precisely.

How to start preparing right now

Even with 2027 dates unconfirmed, the syllabus and pattern for both exams are stable year to year, so there's no reason to wait on your prep. Our IPMAT eligibility, syllabus and pattern breakdown covers exactly how Indore and Rohtak differ, our IPMAT cutoff and previous year trends piece shows what score got candidates shortlisted in 2026, and our IPMAT preparation strategy guide lays out how the two exams demand genuinely different test-taking approaches.

Frequently asked questions

Is IPMAT one exam or several?

Several, and this genuinely confuses aspirants. IIM Indore and IIM Rohtak each conduct their own separate IPMAT with different question papers and formats. IIM Ranchi and IIM Amritsar don't run their own exam at all, they admit based on your IIM Indore IPMAT score. IIM Jammu and IIM Bodh Gaya use a different, NTA-conducted exam called JIPMAT, not IPMAT.

When is IPMAT 2027?

Not officially confirmed yet as of this writing. Based on previous years' patterns, IIM Indore's exam typically falls in the first week of May and IIM Rohtak's in the second week of May, with notifications expected around October 2026 (Indore) and January 2027 (Rohtak). Treat these as estimates, not confirmed dates, until each IIM releases its own notification.

What did IPMAT 2026 registration dates and fees look like?

For reference: IIM Indore's 2026 registration ran 2 February to 17 March, with a fee of ₹4,130 for General category and ₹2,065 for reserved categories. IIM Rohtak's ran 6 February to 6 April 2026, with a flat fee of ₹4,937 and no category-based fee concession. Fees and windows for 2027 should be broadly similar but aren't confirmed yet.

Is there an age limit for IPMAT?

Yes, and it's stricter than most entrance exams. IIM Indore requires candidates to have been born on or after a specific cutoff date each year (effectively capping age at 20 for the General category, with a 5-year relaxation for SC/ST/PwD candidates). Check our detailed eligibility article for the exact mechanics.

How many seats does IPMAT offer?

IIM Indore had 150 domestic seats and IIM Rohtak had 198 seats (including 10% reserved for EWS) in the 2026 cycle. Seat counts can shift slightly year to year.
