SSC CGL vs Bank PO: Check Posting, Pay and Timeline First
SSC CGL vs bank PO: bank PO starts higher, at ₹48,480 basic pay, but can post you anywhere in India, while SSC CGL lets you rank 40 post lines that start lower.
Updated 2 Nov 2026

Key takeaways
- Neither exam wins outright. Pick bank PO if you need the highest start and can be posted anywhere in India. Pick SSC CGL if you want to rank the posts you would accept and can start lower for most of them.
- Bank PO starting basic pay of ₹48,480 is above all 40 CGL post lines. Only 18 CGL post lines start at ₹44,900 or more, and only 3 start at ₹47,600.
- On IBPS's own schedules, a PO cycle runs about six to eight months from applications to provisional allotment. CGL 2026 opened on 21 May 2026 and its second exam is scheduled for December 2026, so its final result is a 2027 event.
- Run the four-question picker below against the notices, then compare coaching for the one exam you choose.

A bank Probationary Officer (PO) starts on a basic pay of ₹48,480, according to the notification of the Institute of Banking Personnel Selection (IBPS). The 40 post lines in the Staff Selection Commission (SSC) notice for the 2026 Combined Graduate Level (CGL) examination start between ₹25,500 and ₹47,600. None of them starts as high as a PO.
That does not make bank PO the automatic winner. CGL is a list of 40 post lines, not one job. The two routes also differ on a rule that matters as much as pay: who decides where you are posted. IBPS says a PO may be posted anywhere in India or outside it. In CGL you rank the posts yourself.
The sections below set pay, posting, timeline and exam stages side by side, then give a four-question picker to fill in before you spend months preparing for one exam.
SSC CGL vs bank PO: which should you choose?
Choose bank PO if you need the highest starting basic pay and can accept a posting anywhere in India. Choose SSC CGL if you want to rank the posts you would take and can accept a lower start for most of them. Basic pay is the fixed pay before allowances. No official notice makes one exam the better career for everyone.
Four differences can be checked in the notices, and they are the ones to decide on:
- Starting basic pay, which spans 40 post lines in CGL and one scale for PO.
- Who decides the posting.
- How long the route takes.
- Which stages you must clear.
Difficulty is a fifth question, but the notices do not rank it. It depends on which sections you are strongest in, and the FAQ below covers how to test it.
How does bank PO pay compare with SSC CGL pay?
A bank PO's starting basic pay of ₹48,480 is above the starting basic pay of every one of the 40 post lines in the CGL 2026 notice, which run from ₹25,500 to ₹47,600. As of November 2026, the Pay Levels (the government's pay-matrix grades) in the SSC notice dated 21 May 2026 break down as follows.
| Pay level | Starting basic pay | Post lines in the notice | Class of post | PO's ₹48,480 as a multiple |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Level 8 | ₹47,600 | 3 | Group B | 1.02 |
| Level 7 | ₹44,900 | 15 | Group B | 1.08 |
| Level 6 | ₹35,400 | 10 | Group B | 1.37 |
| Level 5 | ₹29,200 | 6 | Group C | 1.66 |
| Level 4 | ₹25,500 | 6 | Group C | 1.90 |
Our count: we tallied the "likely posts" listed in section 2 of the notice, one line per post and department (40 in total, 28 in Group B and 12 in Group C). The multiple is ₹48,480 divided by each level's starting basic, rounded to two decimals. Group B and Group C are the government's classes of posts.
The three Level 8 lines are Assistant Audit Officer (Central Cadre), Assistant Audit Officer (State Cadre) and Assistant Accounts Officer (State Cadre), all in the Indian Audit and Accounts Department. Level 7 holds the Assistant Section Officer lines, Inspector of Income Tax, Inspector (Central Excise) and Assistant Enforcement Officer, among others. Level 4 holds Tax Assistant in two tax boards and Postal Assistant.
The PO figure is the starting basic in IBPS's pay scale, and allowances and perquisites (non-cash benefits such as housing) follow each bank's own rules. The comparison above is basic pay only. For take-home pay in a given CGL post, ask a serving officer in that department for a recent salary slip.
Pension also depends on the employer. The Pension Fund Regulatory and Development Authority (PFRDA) says new central government recruits from 1 April 2025 can choose the Unified Pension Scheme. It pays 50% of the average basic pay of the last 12 months after 25 years of qualifying service, with a minimum of ₹10,000 a month after 10 years. Whether your CGL post falls under that, and what a bank offers, should be read in the offer letter before you accept.
Who decides where you are posted in SSC CGL and bank PO?
In bank PO the bank decides; in SSC CGL you decide which post you go for, and the location then depends on the department you join. IBPS's notification says: "This is an All India cadre and provisionally allotted candidates … may be posted anywhere in India/ outside India as per discretion of the Participating Bank."
The CGL notice works differently:
- The Commission allots posts "on the basis of merit-cum-preferences of Posts" that you list.
- It does not collect state-wise or zone-wise vacancies, and it tells candidates to ask the user departments (the ministries and offices that employ the selected candidates).
- Assistant Audit Officer and Assistant Accounts Officer candidates are allotted to offices across India by merit order and their preference for a state or union territory.
- Once a post is allotted, the Commission does not change it if you fail that post's physical or medical standards. Your candidature is rejected instead. Posts such as Inspector (Central Excise, Examiner, Preventive Officer) and Sub-Inspector in the Central Bureau of Investigation carry such standards.
So rank only posts you would actually accept. Later transfers follow the rules of the department or bank you join, so before you choose, ask someone serving in the exact post how often they have moved.

How long does bank PO or SSC CGL take from notice to final result?
On IBPS's own schedules, a bank PO cycle runs about six to eight months from the opening of applications to provisional allotment, the step where a bank is assigned. In SSC CGL 2026, the second exam alone sits at least six months after the notice, and the final result comes after it. These dates are a snapshot, and delays in either cycle would change the gap.
- IBPS PO, vacancies of 2026-27: the notification opened applications on 1 July 2025, and its tentative schedule puts provisional allotment in January and February 2026. That is 6 to 8 months, our arithmetic: 1 July to the start of January is six months, to the end of February eight.
- IBPS PO, vacancies of 2027-28: applications opened in July 2026, and IBPS's tentative schedule runs to interviews in November and December 2026 and, per the same schedule, provisional allotment in January 2027, per its notification. That is 6 to 7 months by the same method.
- SSC CGL 2025: the Commission published its final result on 14 May 2026, after a first round of tentative allocation on 8 April 2026, and recommended 15,118 candidates.
- SSC CGL 2026: the notice appeared on 21 May 2026, Tier-I (the first computer-based exam) ran from 30 September to 30 October 2026, and Tier-II (the second computer-based exam) is tentatively December 2026.
Joining follows the final result in both routes. Our inference is that if you need a salary by mid-2027, the bank route fits that deadline better. If you can wait, the gap matters less.

How do SSC CGL and bank PO exam stages, age limits and fees differ?
SSC CGL has two computer-based tiers, while the bank PO route has preliminary and main exams, a personality test and an interview. The table uses the 2026 cycle notices and applies as of November 2026.
| Item | SSC CGL 2026 | IBPS PO (2027-28 vacancies) |
|---|---|---|
| Stages | Tier-I and Tier-II, both computer-based | Prelims (the preliminary exam), Main, Personality Test, Interview |
| First exam | 100 questions, 200 marks, 1 hour; reasoning, general awareness, quantitative aptitude, English; 0.50 marks lost per wrong answer | 100 questions, 100 marks, 60 minutes |
| Later exam | Tier-II Paper-I, Session-I (2 hours 15 minutes): Section-I mathematical abilities and reasoning, 60 questions, 180 marks; Section-II English language and comprehension plus general awareness, 70 questions, 210 marks; Section-III a qualifying computer knowledge test; Section-IV a data entry speed test or computer proficiency test for some posts. Plus Paper-II or Paper-III for statistics and audit posts. Negative marking is 1 mark per wrong answer in Paper-I Sections I to III (0.50 in Paper-II and Paper-III) | Main: 170 questions, 200 marks, 160 minutes, plus a descriptive paper of 2 questions, 25 marks, 30 minutes |
| Age (cut-off date) | 18–27, 18–30, 20–30 or 18–32 by post (1 August 2026) | 20–30 (1 July 2026) |
| Fee | ₹100; women, Scheduled Castes (SC), Scheduled Tribes (ST), Persons with Benchmark Disabilities (PwBD) and ex-servicemen exempt | ₹850; ₹175 for SC, ST and PwBD |
The sources are the SSC notice and the IBPS notification. The IBPS Personality Test does not qualify or disqualify, but appearing in it is mandatory to reach the interview.
Reasoning, quantitative aptitude and English appear in the first exam of both routes. Early practice therefore carries over (our inference), but the later stages differ.
How do you pick between SSC CGL and bank PO? A four-question check
Run each test below and write your answer next to it. The notices give the numbers.
| Check | How to run it | Points to bank PO | Points to SSC CGL |
|---|---|---|---|
| Posting | Name every state you would accept for your first 3 years. | 10 or more states. IBPS may post a PO anywhere in India. | 1 to 9 states, and you pick posts with a state preference. Ask the department about office locations. |
| Pay floor | Write the lowest starting basic pay you can live on. | Your floor is above ₹47,600. Only the PO's ₹48,480 clears it. | Your floor is ₹44,900 or less. 18 of 40 post lines (3 at Level 8, 15 at Level 7) qualify, and below that more open up. |
| Waiting time | Write the date by which you must be earning. | You need an income by mid-2027. | You can wait for a result in 2027 or later. |
| Stages | Take a 100-question mock for each under exam timing and compare your scores as percentages. | Your percentage score is higher on the prelims mock. | Your percentage score is higher on the CGL Tier-I mock, and you prefer a multiple-choice Tier-II with a skill test for some posts. If the two scores are within 5 percentage points, weigh the other three checks. |
Worked example: your floor is ₹44,900 and you can live in one state only. Your pay test leaves 18 CGL post lines plus PO. The posting test then rules out PO, so you focus on the 18, starting with the Assistant Audit Officer and Assistant Accounts Officer lines, where the notice says a state preference is considered.
