CAT Syllabus 2026: What the Papers Test and How to Check a Course
The CAT syllabus has no official topic list, only three named sections. The usable syllabus is what recent papers tested, and any course can be checked against it.
Updated 7 Nov 2026

Key takeaways
- There is no official topic-wise CAT syllabus. The official information bulletin names three sections, and every topic list online is a private compilation from past papers.
- In the three exam-day sittings (slots) of CAT 2025, 16 of 24 verbal questions were reading comprehension, and Arithmetic plus Algebra made up 47 of 66 Quantitative Ability (Quant) questions (71%).
- Four widely read syllabus pages list between about 8 and 28 Quant topics (read on 7 November 2026), depending on how they group topics, so judge a course by whether it covers what the papers tested, not by its list length.
- Check any course's module list against five tests: current 68-question pattern, reading comprehension weight, Arithmetic and Algebra first, coverage of Geometry, Number System and Modern Maths, and mixed Data Interpretation and Logical Reasoning (DILR) practice.

Most CAT syllabus lists online describe the same exam grouped in different ways, and the PDFs that look official are private compilations. The Common Admission Test (CAT) is the MBA entrance exam that one Indian Institute of Management (IIM) runs each year, and its official information bulletin names only three sections.
That gap is where people go wrong. A longer list does not mean a bigger exam. It usually means a page grouped topics more finely, or kept items that have not turned up on a paper lately. Build your preparation, or choose a course, from the longest list and you risk spending weeks on modules the exam does not test.
Online Coaching 4u publishes this page. We run a directory that lists CAT coaching institutes; we do not teach CAT, and this page compares none of them. What we can give you is a count of what the 2025 papers tested and a check you can run on any course before you enquire. Both are below.
Is there an official CAT syllabus, or only a list of sections?
As of 7 November 2026, CAT 2026 is scheduled for 29 November 2026, in three sessions, conducted by IIM Indore. There is no official topic list. The exam has three sections: Verbal Ability and Reading Comprehension (VARC), Data Interpretation and Logical Reasoning (DILR) and Quantitative Ability (QA). The information bulletin on the official CAT website gives the 2026 paper as 68 questions, 204 marks and 120 minutes, split 24, 22 and 22 across VARC, DILR and QA.
Data Interpretation (DI) means reading tables and charts. Logical Reasoning (LR) means solving puzzles, arrangements and grouping problems. Quantitative Ability is the maths section.
Every topic list online, including a PDF titled "syllabus", is compiled from past papers. Read the information bulletin on the official CAT website yourself, because it is the only document that governs the exam.
Old PDFs also describe an older exam. DILR rose from 20 to 22 questions in 2025, taking the paper from 66 to 68 questions, according to the official CAT information bulletins on iimcat.ac.in. A 2018 or 2019 file therefore cannot tell you the current split.
Why do four widely read CAT syllabus pages list between about 8 and 28 Quant topics?
Each page groups and trims topics differently, and the exam is not different. Four widely read syllabus pages list between about 8 and 28 Quant topics (read on 7 November 2026). We counted each named topic or sub-topic once, including a group heading such as Arithmetic where the page lists it as an item beside its sub-topics. Counts are approximate, because one page lists "Arithmetic" and its sub-topics separately and another lists them together.
| Page (read on 7 November 2026) | Quant topics | DILR topics | VARC topics |
|---|---|---|---|
| about 8 | 4 | 4 | |
| about 22 | 7 | 7 | |
| about 26 | 18 | 17 | |
| 28 or more | 6 or more | 4 |
The longest lists include items such as analogies, fill-in-the-blanks and critical reasoning in VARC. The 2025 slot breakdowns we checked show the 8 verbal ability questions as para-based tasks, with no analogies or fill-in-the-blanks. That does not prove those items can never return. It does mean you should not assume a long list is a safer list.
Weightage percentages on some of these pages are harder to trust than topic lists, because they do not show the papers they were counted from. The next section shows a count you can redo.
What did the CAT 2025 papers actually test?
In all three CAT 2025 slots (the three sittings held on exam day), 16 of the 24 VARC questions were reading comprehension (RC), and Arithmetic plus Algebra made up 47 of the 66 Quant questions across the slots. These counts come from a published topic-wise analysis of CAT 2025 by an education portal.
Quant (22 questions per slot)

| Topic | Slot 1 | Slot 2 | Slot 3 | Three slots |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Arithmetic | 10 | 8 | 9 | 27 |
| Algebra | 7 | 7 | 6 | 20 |
| Geometry and Mensuration (area and volume of shapes) | 3 | 3 | 4 | 10 |
| Number System | 1 | 2 | 2 | 5 |
| Modern Maths | 1 | 2 | 1 | 4 |
| Total | 22 | 22 | 22 | 66 |
Our working: Arithmetic 27 plus Algebra 20 is 47, and 47 divided by 66 is 71%. Modern Maths means permutation and combination, probability and set theory.
VARC (24 questions). RC is 16 questions, which is 67% of the section. The other 8 are verbal ability questions: parajumbles (re-ordering jumbled sentences), para summary and odd sentence out. GradSquare's reports for slot 1, slot 2 and slot 3 match on RC and also list para completion.
DILR (22 questions per slot, 66 across three). The same analysis classifies 39 as logical reasoning, 12 as data interpretation and 15 as mixed DI-LR caselets (short data sets mixing text and numbers). Those are 59%, 18% and 23%, which add to 100%. Pure chart-reading was the smallest group, and logic-heavy sets were the largest.
Limits. Labelling a question as Arithmetic or Algebra is a judgement. GradSquare's slot reports match the portal analysis in slot 1. In slot 2 they give Arithmetic 9 (not 8), Number System 3 (not 2) and Modern Maths 0 (not 2). In slot 3 they give Algebra 7 (not 6) and Geometry 3 (not 4). On GradSquare's counts, Arithmetic plus Algebra is 17, 16 and 16, which is 49 of 66 (74%). This is also one year of papers. We would treat the pattern (RC first, then Arithmetic and Algebra) as a strong guide and the exact counts as approximate. Repeat the count on the previous papers you practise with.
How do you check whether a CAT course covers the syllabus?
Ask the provider for its module list, then test it with five checks, each with a pass and a fail. The checks below are our recommendation, built on the 2025 counts above.

| Check | Pass | Fail |
|---|---|---|
| 1. Pattern | The course plans for 68 questions, split 24 VARC, 22 DILR, 22 QA, in 120 minutes | It quotes an older pattern or cannot say the split |
| 2. Reading comprehension | RC has at least as many sessions as parajumbles, para summary and odd sentence out combined, since RC was 16 of 24 questions in 2025 | RC has fewer sessions than those three combined |
| 3. Quant order | Arithmetic and Algebra are taught first and get the most sessions | Every Quant topic gets equal time |
| 4. Quant coverage | Geometry and Mensuration, Number System and Modern Maths each have at least one dedicated session in the module list | Any of these three has no session |
| 5. DILR | Practice sets mix logic and data sets, and the module list shows a named session or mock-set review on set selection | DILR is only solved examples of one type, or no session covers set selection |
Send the provider this message and keep the reply:
Please send the module list for VARC, DILR and QA with the number of sessions for each. Does the plan assume 68 questions split 24, 22 and 22? How many sessions go to reading comprehension, to Arithmetic and to Algebra? Are Geometry, Number System and Modern Maths covered? Please confirm fees, batch dates and refund terms in the same reply.
For the next decisions, see which type of online CAT preparation fits you, which mock test series suits your weakest section, how to get refund terms in writing, CAT coaching fees in India and our coaching-fee comparison calculator.
On our online coaching directory you can browse CAT and MBA institutes by study mode, city and verification status, and send an enquiry or callback request at no cost to you. You confirm fees, batches, faculty, duration and refund terms directly with the provider.
What should you study first if you are short of time?
Study reading comprehension, Arithmetic and Algebra first, then Geometry and Mensuration, then DILR set practice, and leave Number System and Modern Maths for last. This is our recommendation from the 2025 counts, not an official plan.
- RC daily. It carried 16 of 24 VARC questions in every slot.
- Arithmetic, then Algebra. They supplied 47 of 66 Quant questions.
- Geometry and Mensuration.It supplied 10 of 66.
- DILR sets.Practise deciding which sets to skip, since 22 questions in 40 minutes rarely allow every set.
- Number System and Modern Maths. They supplied 5 and 4 of 66. Cover them last, because slot-to-slot counts shift.

Frequently asked questions
No. The IIMs do not issue a topic-wise CAT syllabus; the official CAT information bulletin names VARC, DILR and QA. A PDF called the "official syllabus" is a private compilation from past papers. Check the pattern in the bulletin on iimcat.ac.in.
Not for planning. DILR has carried 22 questions since 2025, and the 2026 paper is 68 questions in 120 minutes, according to the official CAT website. An older PDF describes an older pattern, so use it only for topic ideas.
